Pawn : The foot soldier. Moves forward, captures diagonally. A pawn is the most numerous and least valuable piece on the board, valued at a single point.
Each player starts the game with eight pawns. A pawn is traditionally valued at 1 point in chess, making it the least valuable piece on the board.
Movement: Pawns only move forward. They advance one square at a time, except for their very first move, where they have the option to move forward two squares.
Capturing: Unlike other pieces, pawns do not capture the same way they move. They capture one square diagonally forward.
Promotion: If a pawn successfully reaches the opposite end of the board, it is promoted and immediately transforms into any other piece of the player's choice, usually a queen.
